This was something I really had to work on and I still struggle with it to be honest with you.
The idea that I needed to be perfect in order to get to my goals. I thought I needed to eat perfectly all the time. I thought that was the only way I was going to lose weight. Then when I treated myself, I would feel horrible that I "cheated" and then I'd give up on that plan.
Same with working out and making a schedule for that. I would set out a plan for the week of what workout I was going to do, but then if I didn't get one done or missed one, I would give up on that plan, thinking it was impossible to get to my goals.

Mini goals and steps are GREAT to have in order to get to your BIG goal. But to me, it was all or nothing. Of course there was a day where I didn't make it to the gym, or I slipped up on my eating, enjoyed a treat, and then I'd feel horrible that I didn't follow my plan. Then I'd get off track. Give up. Not realizing that I HAD been making progress.
If you are a perfectionist, like me, you have to know that it's okay that you didn't follow your schedule perfectly or had a treat today. Things are going to come up where we have to switch our plans a little bit.
Fact is -- that when you're making progress, it's NOT going to be perfection. We're human, none of us are perfect. Life happens, plans change, and you just have to roll with it. Key is to keep that vision in your mind of where you want to go and knowing that you're getting better and better every day.
- Did you add an extra walk in this week ?
- Did you eating out less and cooking at home more this week ?
- Did you choose a healthier option if you went out for dinner then you normally would have chosen ?
- Did you push just a little bit more in your workouts then you did last month ?
- Did you saying NO to more sweets then you would normally have eaten before ?
- Did you cut out pop this week ? (or even for a day, I know this is a tough one for some people)Did you drinking more water then you did last month ?
- Did you decide to switch your evening TV time to a 30 min workout instead this week ?
When you switch up what you NORMALLY would have done with something new, those little victories and progressive habits are getting you closer to your goals each month.
It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as you're moving in the RIGHT direction. As long as you have PERSISTENCE !
I'm so much stronger now than I was a year ago. Yes, there are days when I have a treat with my kids or enjoy a pasta dinner instead of my usual chicken and veggies. BUT, I don't do that every night like we used to a year ago. I've made progress.
Be PROUD of the changes you've made, EVERY step of the way. You don't magically go from Start to Finish. There are so many steps in between there that need to be celebrated!
Concentrate on those non-scale victories like:
Concentrate on those non-scale victories like:
- Going down a pant size
- Doing one more push-up than you could last week
- When your heavy weights feel like light weights ;)
- Being able to do your walking route just a little bit quicker than last time
- Trying a new clean eating recipe and LIKING it!
- Getting in more steps on your Fitbit then you did last month
So, instead of comparing ourselves with others, getting frustrated on those numbers on the scale, being tempted to quit because you think it's not working anymore. Do NOT give up. You are doing everything right to succeed in this, and it doesn't have to be perfect to get to your goals. People that get to their goals don't get there on a fast straight perfect road. They navigate through a road with bumps, curves and obstacles. They just keep going with a vision in their mind of where they want to go. As long as you keep at it, you'll get better and better each day.
Overcome those obstacles that normally would have brought you down and made you quit.
Remember that this is called a journey for a reason. It's sometimes a long and difficult road. But one that if you are committed and can envision yourself where you'd like to be, then you will get there. Just by making progress on your decisions each and every day. Better than you were yesterday!
